Recipe for Indian Onion Salad/Chutney/Dips for Poppadoms
By G Miah
Everyone loves Indian onion salad or chutney with their poppadoms to enjoy the fresh, crisp taste of onions, cucumbers and garden mint. You have come to the right place for a simple and easy online recipe on how to make Indian onion salad or chutney as some people call it.
This is an onion salad recipe for indian poppadoms, but that doesn't mean you cannot eat it with anything else!
Do you enjoy your poppadoms with onion salad, mango chutney or lime pickle? Do you cook Indian food at home? You may already buy poppadoms from supermarkets, and buy jars of chutneys, but now you can make your own onion salad/chutney at home freshly made to enjoy with poppadoms, and you don't have to go out to a restaurant or buy them from a takeaway anymore!
This is a very quick and easy recipe for this salad that is made with simple ingredients such as onions, cucumbers, tomatos etc.
First, collect your ingredients which are listed below.
- 3 onions
- 1/3 of a cucumber
- 2 tomatoes
- handfull of corriander leaves
- fresh garden mint sauce
- teaspoon of crushed methi leaves (fenugreek leaves/herbs)
- slice of fresh lemon juice
Continue below for the process...
The Process
Get a clean chopping board and a clean vegetable cutting knife you feel comfortable using.
First, cut all three onions very finely and place in a medium sized clean bowl.
Cut the cucumber and tomato very finely, leave the mint sauce, methi leaves, fresh slice of lemon and corriander until last.
Cut the fresh slice of lemon and corriander very very fine, because the finer you cut them the better fusion of taste you will get.
Place everything in the bowl including the mint sauce and methi leaves.
Mix all the ingredients together slowly and as carefully as possible so as not to squash them, which will release the moisture, which you do not want!
VOILA! there you have it, onion salad/chutney you made yourself to enjoy with poppadoms from your local Indian restaurant/takeaway or a supermarket!
Enjoy.
Before you do that though, check out this link to also complement your poppadoms!

does anyone know what the orange coloured coconut type stuff is that is sometimes served with poppadoms?
It's just dessicated coconut with orange food colouring. Nothing special, just to make it look attractive.
