Dreams in Islam: An Islamic Perspective on True Dreams and Bad Dreams

89

By G Miah

Introduction

"True dreams are from Allah and bad dreams are from satan" [Sahih of Bukhari, Vol 9 p 95, no 113]

Why do we dream? What are meanings of dreams? What do we know about dreams? Why do we have nightmares?

There are so many questions to be answered when it comes to dreams.

I was very curious once when i was gathering knowledge of my religion, Islam, and at the same time researching Christianity due to learning of the great similarities of the two religions. As i was growing up and going to mosque and learning the Quran because i was told to by my parents, i did not understand what the whole reason was behind it all. Not until i reached the age of 17 at least when things were becoming confusing to me. I read about Jesus in Christianity and was surprised to know that 'Issa' is Jesus in Islam. Since then i have been reading many books, the translation of the Quran etc to gain as much knowledge as possible.

Dreams and the process of dreams intrigued me since i was young when i used to have some very bad dreams and sometimes good dreams. My research through the years have helped me understand it all and now i know what to do before i go to sleep and after i wake up. You will understand by reading the information below the whole process of how we dream and what happens from before going to sleep to waking up.

(This article will not address scientificevidence. It is only to understand about dreams in an Islamic point of view).

The Soul

Every person will agree that human beings have a soul, and a person becomes 'dead' by the departure of 'life' or 'soul'. The soul is the only part of the unknown that even atheists and materialists cannot deny.

In Islam, there are a few glimpses into the knowledge of the soul.

A verse from the Quran:

'They ask you (O Muhammad) concerning the soul. Say 'The soul is of the affair (i.e., knowledge) of my Lord. And you (people) have not been given of knowledge except a little.'

A scholar interpreted this as:

'This means that the knowledge of the soul is a great major affair that belongs with Allah. He kept this knowledge obscure and undetailed so that people would realise their inability to know the truth about their soul - though they know it (i.e., the soul) exists. And being capable of fully comprehending the truth about themselves is more reason for them to be incapable of fully comprehending the truth about Allah (i.e., His majesty and other attributes).'

We understand that the soul is an invisible object, but we cannot explain what the soul is fully. When we go to sleep, we actually experience a minor death. Every sleeping person have their soul depart from their body and is held with Allah (God). He then releases them when it is time to wake. This means that every time someone is asleep, their soul leaves their body. He holds the souls for which death has arrived, and releases the other souls until their time of death.

"Allah takes the souls at their time of death, and (also) those that have not died yet - during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed, in this are signs for those who reflect." Az-Zumar 39:42

During our sleep in "minor death" our souls get to meet other souls of both living and dead people, and the interaction between one soul and the other may be remembered only by one or both of the souls.

Satan

When night comes it is an opportunity for evil doing by many creatures causing harm and spreading fear. While majority of people sleep and rest under the night cover, many crimes take place in that time of darkness. What are these evil creatures? They are Jinns (devils, ghosts, demons), black magic and countless evil practice by degenerate people.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provided us with a set of instructions for warding off evils of the night. The most effective form of protection is extolling Allah in the form of saying Allah's name before we do anything. An affirmation that what we do is by Allah's will, help and protection is by pronouncing Allah's name saying bismillah. Saying bismillah upon entering the home inhibits the devils from entering that home. You should keep your food covered by saying bismillah also to protect against any diseases or food poisoning.

Satan strives to divert people from Allah, and he places a strong spell upon each persons head when he goes to sleep. Satan ties three knots over the back of the sleeping person's head, blowing into each knot while saying, 'You have a long night, so sleep on.' He also urinates in the ears of some people making them deaf to calls for worship and prayer.

To untie the three knots over the back of a sleeping persons head, these three steps are needed:

  • Wake up for the morning prayer (Fajr)
  • Do ablution (wudu)
  • Carry out the morning prayer (fajr)

Inshallah the three actions above will untie the three knots made by Satan behind a persons head and start the day perfectly!

Muslims should always strive against Satan who is the main enemy of Muslims to overcome the evil whispers he mentions into Human ears evil thoughts and actions to carry out. Muslims should always be weary of the evil whispers Satan whispers into peoples ears and fight against the desires and urges that sometimes humans feel. The easiest way to do that is to remember Allah at that time of the thought and pray to Allah for protection against Satan and his evil whispers.

What Is A Dream?

A dream is basically a vision that a person sees during their sleep. Dreams are a part of the spiritual parts of human life. Only by adhering to the guidance of the Quran and Sunnah can we form a reasonable understanding of dreams in an Islamic concept.

Dreams are visions Allah creates and instills into our hearts. Some dreams truthful and sublime, are granted by Allah. They are shown to support reassure a believer or warn them of some individuals, reprimand them for some wrongdoings, foretell him of some good (to anticipate) or harm (to beware of), and so on. Such dreams are attributed to Allah because of the truth and good they carry.

Other dreams, false and unpleasant, mix truth with falsehood, and frighten people during sleep or even after awakening. Such dreams are whispered by a devil and are attributed to Satan.

"Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is in charge of all things."

Satan And Bad Dreams

Satan is attributed with bad dreams for these reasons:

  • He initiates the bad and hateful thoughts and insinuates them into people's thoughts in dream form.
  • He likes and approves bad dreams and evil thoughts.
  • Bad dreams conform with his evil nature.
  • His hate towards humans makes him do all that is possible to harm and frighten them - both during their sleep and their wakefulness.

Satan shows people absurd dreams which are unimaginable in real life.

A person dreamt that his throat was cut and his head fell off and rolled away. He chased after it, retrieved it and put it back in it's place. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) smiled and said:

"When satan makes fun of you during your sleep, do not tell people about it."

The Prophet (pbuh) discouraged people from relating dreams that appear meaningless or frightening.

What Are Wet Dreams?

Wet dreams are associated with the ejection of seminal fluid during sleep. Seminal fluids eject after having dreams or visions of prohibited actions or interactions instigated by satan. It is mainly common for men to have wet dreams, but women can also have them.

Actions To Take Upon Having A Good Or Bad Dream

Actions to take upon having a good dream

  1. View it as a good omen from Allah
  2. Praise Allah for it
  3. Narrate it to those whom he really trusts
  4. Avoid narrating the dream to whomever he does not trust
  5. Seek it's interpretation, especially from learned people with good knowledge of dream interpretation

Actions to take upon having a bad dream

  1. Seek Allah's protection from it's evil
  2. Seek Allah's protection from satan
  3. Lightly spit three times, on your left side
  4. Turn over and sleep facing the right hand side
  5. Say some duas or narrate some short surats (verses) like ayat ul kursi or say A'uthu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim (I seek Allah's protection from Satan, the outcast)
  6. Get up and pray
  7. Avoid narrating it to anyone else
  8. Avoid attempting to interpret it

Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) Dream About Islam And Imaan

 I would like to share this dream Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had about a King's banquet;

Indeed, i saw in a dream as though Jibril was at my head and Mikail at my feet. One of them said to the other, "Indeed, he is asleep." The other replied, "Indeed, his eyes are asleep, but his heart is awake."

Then one of them said, "Indeed, there is a parable that applies to our companion, so tell him the parable." The other said, "Indeed, he is asleep." And the first replied, "Indeed, his eyes are asleep, but his heart is awake."

So, one of them said, "Listen, may your ear be able to hear; and understand, may your heart be able to understand; Indeed, the parable that applies to you and your people is that of a king who built a mansion, established in it a hall, set up in the hall a banquet, and then sent a messenger to invite people to his food. Some people answered the messenger, while others ignored him. Those who answered him entered the mansion and ate from the banquet, while those who ignored him neither entered the mansion nor ate from the banquet."

One of them said, "Interpret it for him so that he would understand it." But again, the other said, "Indeed, he is asleep." And the first replied, "Indeed, his eyes are alseep, but his heart is awake."

So, one of them said, "The king, then, is Allah, the mansion is Islam, the hall is Jannah (heaven), and you, O Muhammad, are the messenger; Whoever answers you will enter into Islam, and whoever enters into Islam will enter Jannah and eat from it. Therefore, whoever obeys Muhammad has surely obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys Muhammad has surely disobeyed Allah. And Muhammad is a divider among the people."

This is a link to a free dream interpretaion online dictionary where you enter a word corresponding to a vision of the dream you had to find the interpretation.

The dream dictionary presented in the link above is based on the work of Muhammad Ibn Sirin, a specialist in the field of dream interpretation in regards to the traditions of Islam.

Muhammad Ibn Sirin was born in 654 and died at the age of 77. He was a very pious Muslim. He belonged to the tabighins, formed by the kufit school.
However, in today's world, he is more know for his expertise in giving the meaning of dreams.
He also brought lots of hadiths from Abu Huraira, Anas Ibn Malik and others.

Sallam, G Miah.

Interisting topic to write indeed. I wish I learned Islam in more younger age like you so I don't have to spent 6 years in univ to studied Sigmund Freud's intrepretation of dreams. So what should I do with the knowledge in my head now? Hhhh...

Anyway, Nice Hub, Brother. ^_^

I love love this subject of dreams and it is very interesting when it is researched deeply in Islam. I love to gain knowledge in the unknown e.g. About the soul, before life and after death and also the universe. The Holy Quran has all the answers and there are so many Islamic books out there about each and every thing.

At 17 i was confused as to why me and my friends and other children were forced to go to mosque, because our parents didn't explain why it was important. I was surprised at the similar prophets in Christianity and Islam which led me to research both religions and find out the real reasons why we were taught the Quran and had to go to mosque.

I use everything i learnt from Islamic books and Quran for myself and my brothers and sisters in Islam and share knowledge with them.

Thank you Freya, i appreciate you leaving a comment, share your knowledge with people, and what better place to do so than HP!

Thank you Aamnah for viewing this article and leaving a comment.

You're not alone, everyone has worries in any corner of their minds, whether it be small or large worries.

About seeing your deceased mother in your dream, my advice is that you should speak to someone who is very religious and well respected and has Islamic knowledge, eg, and Imam, Hafeez. You could also contact Islamic tv channels who have live phone in sessions, or even email that Imam from the live tv program.

Whatever you do, i hope Inshallah Allah listens to your prayers and forgives your mother who is granted jannatul firdous.

Thank you Tonymac for your comment, and i i learned so much researching the information too.

when i was in Bangladesh a few years back, i had some wonderful dreams which were very thought provoking. I spoke to my grandmother and told her the dreams. She, as usual, showed a lot of interest in what i had to say. She went and told my uncle who is an Imam (Priest), and he came running to me and shouted, "don't tell everyone your dreams! They are shown to you by Allah, and you should only tell them to ONE religious person who can interpret them properly, and if you tell them to more than 3 different people, satan will find out, and change them when he gets the opportunity."

Since then i spent some time researching about dreams in Islamic concept, and that's i thought i have to share it. Unfortunately i haven't had the time or opportunity to research it in othe religious concepts, hopefully i will do one day.

Hi Amatulah and thank you for your comment which you are expecting to be interpreted. I cannot interpret dreams as you can see from the above article which is only about the concept of dreams and not interpreting them.

My advice to you is to seek help via an Imam of the nearest mosque to you by contacting them by phone. Or you can go on the website link above and see what the interpretation may be.

I hope everything goes well for you.

I am very interested in dreams and found your hub as I was searching. I wrote a few articles on dreams on hubpages as well. My interest in writing about dreams brought me to hubpages, actually.

I have delved into my own dreams by journaling daily for 2 full years. I have read many books and interpreted many dreams for people. I find dream meanings within cultures and religious beliefs fascinating.

I have always believed that dreams assist us with our personal development and are part of the way we gain insight into ourselves. I thought what you wrote about souls and about Allah or God as they all relate to dreams and dreaming was very interesting. You have a perspective I have not found very often. Thank you for the interesting read.

Thank you very much SerLeon, i appreciate you reading and leaving a comment.

It took me a while to complete this because of the research, experimenting and changing things around all the time. Not exactly sure how long becaus eit was a while a go. It normally could take upto a week, or even just one day, that's if you really concentrate on it and drinks lots of coffee!

When i first published my first hub it was ridiculous, not sure if i still have got it, will check!

The best way to learn is to read other people's hubs, people who have published more than 50 quality hubs and with an overall score of 90. I have a hub called

'Which ubbers to follow' or soemthing, not sure! Read that and you will find links to the best hubbers on Hubpages and learn about everything to do on Hubpages.

Good luck, it takes time so be patient, but make sure when and if you write then publish any hubs that they are quality hubs.

I will jump over to your account and read your hub!

hello

very interesting hub i had a dreasm that sounds very weird to me and im unable to get any interpretation for it i would be glad if anyone would give me a hand.

start of the dream ...

I was going to old friends that i have cut off because the betrayed me while trying to help another friend called dana ...

I went to their house and sat with them for a few minutes, the older sister was sitting on the ground while the younger sister was laying on the sofa ...

while sitting with them i was thinking to myself .. why am i sitting with them and being nice to them ? they have betrayed me ...

then i left with an intention to purchase a new mobile ...

before purchasing a new mobile which i wanted to purchase exactly like the mobile in my hand ...

i though i had to dispose of the mobile in hand ...

and so no one will get the numbers and information from the mobile in hand ... i ate the mobile after removing the SIM card ...

after eating the mobile i regretted not removing the phone memory because there were many numbers i had in it ...

but i was most bothered because it has the numbers for dana's family - a girl i have tried to help but failed -

i thought to myself ... it was not a big deal ... i would ask some people to get the numbers ...

than i changed my mind because i didn't want to involve anyone ...

so i decided to wait for the phone to pass through my digestive track ...

then i came up with the idea of vomiting to get the phone memory ...

this is where i decided to head home and vomit to get the phone memory to retrieve the information from it ...

and then woke up

waiting your response

thanks

Hi, thank you for leaving your dream on here.

I would like to make it very CLEAR that i am not a dream interpreter. I wrote this purely ou tof interest in the subject and to share it with people. But i will try to advise you about your dream and you can think about it and try to piece things together.

From reading your dream i get the feeling that overall, you still have space for them in your heart. They are deeply rooted in your heart and you will never be able to clear things up without speaking to them ever again.

The mobile phone situation seems like as if you are trying all you can to forget about them, but there are 'other' feelings stopping you from forgetting about them.

What i would advise you, depending on how they betrayed you, is to go and speak to them again face to face and try and clear things up with them. This is the best thing you can do. Even if you do not become friends again, at least you will clear things up and find out the truth behind the betrayal. This will relieve you from worrying or thinking about the past and concentrate on the future.

I hope this helps you.

This is in reply to Mr. Bullshit above who left a message. It is obvious that you are very ignorant and just go by what is in the media.

It wasn't Allah who told 'muslims' to kill people at the WTC. Allah will himself punish those people who did this sick action and killed innocent people, not just American, they were Muslims aswell.

If you weren't ignorant then you would have learnt that these so called 'Muslims' were not true Muslims. They were evil human beings who used the verses from Quran wrongly to support their actions.

True Muslims who follow the religion as it should be and guided by Allah and Mohammed's (pbuh) teachings are better than any other human beings on Earth. These are true Muslim people i am talking about, who help their neighbours, no matter what religion they are, who treat other human beings las they wish to be treated, who believe Allah is ONE and guides who he wants. Human beings have been given the freedom of choice, so it is imperative that Muslims live and die by the Quran and Sunnah, anything else will result in punishment directly from Allah in this world or/and the hereafter.

Before you get hot headed against Muslims, think and try to understand true Muslims and you will see those true Muslims are honest, caring, understanding and loving people who get along with all types of peoople. Do not go by what's in the media or on some internet sites. I have attached a link below so you can study Islam in it's truest and purest form. copy and paste into the search box and you will find out EXACTLY what Islam is about. I pray Allah gives you guidance.

This created o whole lot of fear in my mind and as since then affected my perspective to life so negatively. Alhamdulillah, with these information and my life henceforth as changed from being sarcastic to a positive and an optimistic person.

Pls what do i still need to do to stop having wet dreams, even after had done all the necessary duah even before going to bed.

Wa ailaikum salam brother. Like i always say, i am not a dream interpreter and will give my general view on any issues anyone brings up in these kinds of subjects.

The first thing occured to me is i assume you are not married? This is one of the solutions which inshallah will help.

Another thing is do you pray 5 times a day brother? If so then alhamdulillah, keep it up.

I wouldn't worry about this too much because it is a natural thing and also your hormones seem to be very excited! We can protect ourselves from the satans whispers who puts evil thoughts in our minds when we are asleep and awake by always remembering Allah by the way of Dhikr. If we can make a habit of always (i mean always as in while working, sitting eating, drinking, socialising etc etc) doing Dhikr then we will be saved from the satans evil inshallah.

To conclude, i would recommend you pray 5 times a day, if you do not already, get married if you have the means to, and always do the Dhikr of Allah, even while going to sleep then at some point you will continue to do Dhikr in your sleep, which i found happened to me. It is the best sleep ever.

Keep doing the duas you are reading, but also read all the four Qul suras from the Quran 3 times, then blow on the palms of your hands and touch your whole body from head to toe before going to sleep every night and in the morning. Our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) used to do it, and when he couldn't do it himself just before his death, his wife, Aisha did it for Him. SubhanAllah!

I hope this helps brother. Please come back and leave a comment if you found this helpful.

Salaam brother,

very interesting hub ... i wished there was more in there ... have you read about Hazrat Yusuf (AS) ... he was given the gift from Allah for interpreting Dreams.

great effort to put all this together ... i know it's hard to align the thoughts and to put them in writing.

great stuff ... i look forward to reading more from you.

@sisteraysha - there is a hadith which talks in general about everything in life ... "when in doubt, leave it" ... so if you cannot make out anything from your istekhara then leave it and move forward. with istekhara you also get a strong feeling in your heart sometimes... if you're not feeling anything but confusion then my advice would be to leave it and move on.

Thanks brother arksys. It took me a very long time to write this one! Of course i will look to improve it all the time, inshallah.

Thank you for advising the sister above about her istikhara. You are spot on.

Sister Aysha, i think, as brother arksys mentioned, you should probably leave it as there may be confusion. I don't think an istikhara can be determined good or bad by seeing colours. You either probably have to do it again, or leave it, and the most improtant thing is, leave it to Allah and hope you are guided in the right path. Inshallah everything will turn out well for you.

This reply is for both people above.

What you have to remember and understand is that there is no such thing as 'dream interpretation', there is only understanding the 'dream'. The only people who can make you 'understand your dream are knowledgeable people in Islam who are Imams or scholars. If you read the article again, you will find the internet link to an 'interpretaing' website which is genuine, so go and check it out.

The advice i can give you is to pray to Allah daily in your 5 prayers and ask for forgiveness, then inshallah you will feel stress free and your worries should inshallah disappear.

Thank u g.miah

I was jus wondering if one should rely n websites or books fr interpretation...as it is said dat true dreams are very rare and that the same dream can have difderent meaning fr different people... at times d dreams are ny disturbing but ven v tend to look for there interpretation it might mean something real bad...bt the prophet has said dat if v c gud dreams v should share it wid pple...bt wht if we c a dream vch v might consider to be f9...bt v interprted it does nt hold good meaning wht should v do in such a case...plz repy

Thank you for the comment.

I just think that we should not share any dream because we do not know whether it is a good dream or a bad dream, and we cannot depend on dream interpretations either online or in books because, as you said, different dreams mean different things for different people.

My advice to anyone is that you should speak to an Imam or a scholar about the dream because inshallah they will be the ones who can give you the right advice about your dream.

Although our Prophet (pbuh) said tyo share our dreams with other peopel, it is not to be shared with just anyone as satan can manipulate it.

There was a man who saw a very bad dream, and on his way to see the Prophet (pbuh) he told 3 people, and when he got to the prophet (pbuh) and told him the dream, the man got the reply that his dream was a very good one. The only thing was that because he told the 3 people before telling the prophet (pbuh), his dream will not become true and it will be manipulated by satan, and that's what happened.

So just be careful who you share your dreams with.

And Allah and his Messenger (pbuh) know best.

Does anyone know more meanings for this dream?

The dream is regarding someone I met someone who’s name is Tameem Ahmadi (maybe spelled Tamim Ahmedi) at Lowry Mosque / Masjid in (Also known as Islamic Society of East Bay ISEB ). I also saw this person in the Irvington Mosque / Masjid and Masjid Ibrahim Khalilullah in Fremont in the bay area, California. He gives khutba and teaches quran at mosques and my dream is making me now more suspicious about him:

I had a true dream (Ru’ya / vision) in which I saw tameem ahmadi who has been already cursed, his face appeared deformed and really disgusting that you wouldn’t wanna look at him, and that Allah told Jibreel that he hates tameem and to hate tameem and cause the whole Creation to hate him. I know the meaning and interpretation of this dream means that Allah has cursed him, and that Allah hated him and told Jibreel to hate him and cause the whole Creation to hate him, and that it has another meaning that Allah will hate this person and cause Jibreel to hate him and cause the whole creation to hate him.

When I woke up I remembered a hadith. I searched and found the hadith in Sahih Muslim [Book 032, Number 6373]. And here is the hadith I found: Prophet Muhammad –saws said: “When Allah loves a servant, He calls Gabriel and says: ‘Verily, I love so-and-so; you should also love him.’ Then Gabriel loves him and makes an announcement in the heaven saying: ‘Allah loves so-and-so and you should also love him.’ Then the dwellers of the Heaven (the angels) also love him and he is honored in the earth. And when Allah is angry with a servant He calls Gabriel and says: ‘I am angry with so-and-so; you should also be angry with him.’ Then Gabriel becomes angry and makes an announcement to the dwellers of Heaven: ‘Verily Allah hates with so-and so, so you hate him.’ Thus they also become angry with him and he is hated in the earth.”

It is haraam to date because Allah has not given us permission to do it. Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) didn't date before he got married either. If you read the hadeeth Sahih Al Bukhari about Marriage then you will understand more.

Please try speaking to your local imam via a family member. Also please pray to Allah to guide your husband to the right path.

I can't say what it means, but i once dreamt something similar and asked our local masjid imam who told me simply 'You will insha Allah be a pious person, keep praying 5 times a day and stay away from sin', so i would say the same thing to you.

I don't know what to say brother. Please speak to an imam or a highly knowledgeable person who may be able to help you. I wouldn't mention any names.

IT could be that the shaytan is playing with you to make you worried and lose concentration in what you are doing. The best thing to do is to pray regularly and also pray for your mother and father.

Always say the Athkar before doing ANYTHING, especially before going to sleep.

The best way before going to bed make wudu and read 21 times Sura Nas, 21 times Sura Falq, 21 times Sura Akhlas, 21 times Ayatul Kursi , 21 times Daroud and in the end " Fee Loh Mehfooz" 100 times keep to read regularly in shallah screeming problem will finish.
